Minicoy Beach – Lakshwadeep

Some of the “largest lagoons” are said to be found in an extremely picturesque beach called Minicoy in the Lakshadweep. This extremely scenic beach is located in the “atoll” called Minicoy or Maliku.  It is also considered to be one of “the most popular beaches on the island”. In addition, to its exquisite scenic beauty, this beach also provides for a number of activities related to water sports. Furthermore, this beach is also known for a lighthouse that was built by the British in 1885.

There are number of direct cruise services from cities such as Mumbai, Chennai, Cochin, and Vishakhapatnam.

The nearest railway station to this beach is located in Kochi. The Kochi Railway Station is well connected to most major cities in the country.

  1. By air:

The closest airport to this beach is located in Kochi. The Kochi International Airport is well connected to major cities in the country as well as international destination.

Climate and the best time to visit the Minicoy Island

The climate experienced at this beach during the summer season which begins in March and ends in May is extremely “hot” with the temperature ranging from a maximum of 37 degree Celsius to a minimum of 22 degree Celsius with a humidity of about 70-76%. The rainfall (1600 mm annually) received during the monsoon which begins in June and ends in September is extremely “heavy”. In the meanwhile the winter season which begins in November and ends in February is “pleasant” with the temperature ranging from a maximum of 30 degree Celsius to a minimum of 19 degree Celsius. So the ideal time to visit this beach is during the winter from November to December.

Things/activities to do

There are number of things/activities to do found at this beach worth exploring. They are as follows

 Water Sports:

A number of water sports related activities such as scuba diving, kayaking, canoeing, and snorkelling are available at this beach.

  1. The lighthouse:

This lighthouse which was constructed at this beach/island in 1885 by the British is a major tourist attraction.  It is from this lighthouse (at the top) that the panoramic view of entire Lakshadweep Island and surrounding Arabian Sea can be observed and enjoyed, and hence is a must visit.

      2. Juma Masjid:

A Muslim mosque known as the Juma Masjid is yet another major tourist attraction found around this beach that is worth visiting due to its exquisite architecture.
