Murud Beach – Maharashtra

Renowned for being the “cleanest beach” in Alibaug is an extremely scenic beach called Murud Beach. This beautiful and pristine beach is located in a city called Murud in the Raigad district in Maharashtra. In addition, this beach which is located at a distance of 42 km from Alibaugis renowned for its pristine environment. Furthermore, the well-known Murud-Janjira Fort is located in close proximity to this beach.

How to reach the Murud Beach

  1. By train:

The closest railway station to this beach is located in Roha at a distance of 40 km. The Roha Railway Station is well connected to major cities in the country like Bhavnagar, Ratnagiri, Sawantwadi, Trivandrum etc.

Stay with a local in their home

  1. By road:

If you intend to drive to this beach the ideal starting points would be Pune, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Kalyan.

  1. Via Pune:

There is one route from Pune to this beach, and it is via Mumbai-Bangalore Highway/Mumbai-Pune Highway/Mumbai Pune Expressway.

     2. Via Mumbai:

There is one route from Mumbai to this beach, and it is via Mumbai Highway/Mumbai-Bangalore Highway/Mumbai-Pune Highway and SH-92.

      3. Via Navi Mumbai:

There is one route from Navi Mumbai to this beach, and it is via Mumbai Highway/Mumbai-Bangalore Highway/Mumbai-Pune Highway and SH-92.

     4. Via Kalyan:

There is one route from Kalyan to this beach, and it is via SH-92.

  1. By air:

The nearest airport is located in the suburb called Ville Parle. The ChhatrapatiShivaji International Airport is connected to major cities in the country as well as to international destinations.

Climate and the best time to visit the Murud Beach

The climate at this beach during the summer season which begins in March and ends in July is extremely “hot” with the mercury rising to about 36 degree Celsius. The rainfall received during the monsoon season which begins in August and ends in October is extremely heavy. The winter season on the other hand which begins in November and ends in February is extremely pleasant with the mercury dropping to as low as 14 degree Celsius. So the ideal time to visit this beach is during the winter season from November to February.

Things/activities to do

Apart from its picturesque beauty, which must be enjoyed there are not many things/activities found around this beach worth exploring except for a sea fort called MurudJanjira. It is located on an island just off the coast of the Murud village. This fort built during the 17th century holds historical significance pertaining to the great Maratha Empire. In addition, this fort can be visited via ferry service provided from the Murud village.

Word of caution

In February 2016 thirteen students belonging Pune’s Abeda Inamdar Senior College drowned at this beach while on a picnic. This incident clearly indicating that swimming at this beach should certainly be avoided.
