Located at a distance of 14 km from the Digha Beach in West Bengal is a picturesque beach called Sagardwip. This beautiful beach is situated on a small island in the Sunderbans region. It is renowned for its pristine beauty that includes beautiful silver sand and crystal clear sea water. In addition, this beach is also known for magnificent views of the “rising and setting sun “. Furthermore in close proximity to this beach are a number of Hindu temples that are extremely popular.

How to reach Sagardwip Beach

  1. By train:

The nearest railway station to this beach is located in Namkhana. There are a number of train services from places such as Sealdah and Kakdwip that connect to the Namkhana Railway Station.

  1. By road:

If you intend to drive to this beach than the ideal starting points would be Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Patna, and Kolkata.

  1. Via Bhubaneswar:

There are two routes from Bhubaneswar to this beach, and they are via NH-16 and via NH-49 and NH-16.

      2. Via Cuttack:

There are three routes from Bhubaneswar to this beach, and they are via NH-16, via NH-49 and NH-16, and via Arambagh-Goghat-Kamarpukur-Ramjibanpur-Khirpai Road and NH-16.

      3. Via Puri:

There are two routes from Puri to this beach, and they are via NH-16 and via NH-49 and via NH-16.

      4. Via Patna:

There are two routes from Patna to this beach, and they are via NH-19 and via NH-20 and NH-19.

      5. Via Kolkata:

There is one route from Kolkata to this beach, and it is via NH-12.

  1. By air:

The nearest airport is located in Kolkata. The NetajiSubhash Chandra Bose International Airport is well connected to major cities in the country as well as to international destinations.

Climate and the best time to visit the Sagardwip Beach

The maximum temperature at this beach during the summer season which begins in March and ends in June is about 43 degree Celsius. The rainfall received during the monsoon season which begins in July and ends in September is “heavy”. On the other hand the winter season which begins in December and ends in February is extremely pleasant with the temperature ranging from a maximum of 23 degree Celsius to a minimum of 12 degree Celsius. So the ideal time to visit this beach is from October to February during winter.

Things/activities to do

There are a couple of things/activities found around this beach worth exploring. They are as follows

  1. Sagar Lighthouse:

A lighthouse is located around this beach which provides for magnificent views of the surroundings.

      2. Temples:

There are number of popular Hindu temples/shrines such as the Bharat SevashramSangha Temple, Kapil Muni Temple, and Onkarnath Temple located in close proximity to this beach worth visiting especially for those spiritually inclined.

      3. Sunset and Sunrise views:

This beach also provides for magnificent views of the rising and setting of the sun, and hence is an ideal spot for passionate photographers and nature lovers.

Interesting facts

Since this picturesque beach is located at the confluence of the holy River Ganga and Bay of Bengal, pilgrims from all over India pay a visit only to have “holy” dip, and then visit an ashram  linked to Kapil Muni located in close proximity.
