Considered to be “Gateway to several small islands” is a scenic beach called Mandapam Beach in Tamil Nadu. This picturesque beach is located in a town called Mandapam in the Ramanathapuram district. In addition, to its beauty, this beach is also known for its tranquil environment. Furthermore, it is also popular for possessing natural coral reef formation and as a result, attracts a large number of foreign and domestic tourists annually.

The nearest railway station to this beach is located in Rameswaram. The Rameswaram Railway Station is well connected to major cities in the country as Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai etc.

If you intend to drive to this beach then the ideal starting points would be Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai.

There is one route from Bangalore to this beach, and it is via NH-44 and Salem-Madurai and via Vellore-Toothukudi Highway.

      2. Via Chennai:

There are three routes from Chennai to this beach, and they are via NH-38, via NH-32 and NH-38, and via E Coast Road.

      3. Via Coimbatore:

There are three routes from Coimbatore to this beach, and they are via NH-87, via Salem-Madurai Road and NH-87, and via NH-81.

     4. Via Madurai:

There are three routes from Madurai to this beach, and they are via NH-87, via NH-85 and via NH-87, and via Ramanathapuram-SivagangaiMelur Road and NH-87.

  1. By air:

The closest airport to this beach is located in Madurai. The Madurai Airport is well connected to major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

Climate and the best time to visit the Mandapam Beach

The climate at this beach during the summer months which begins in March and ends in June is extremely “hot” with the mercury rising to a maximum of about 35 degree Celsius. The rainfall received during the monsoon season which begins in July and ends in September is “moderate”. While the winter season on the other hand which begins in October and ends in February is extremely “pleasant” with mercury dropping to a minimum of about 17 degree Celsius. So the ideal time to visit this place is during the winter season from October to February.

Things/activities to do

There are a couple of things/activities found around this beach worth exploring. They are as follows

  1. Boating services:

There are a number of boating services that includes glass bottomed boats operated by the state government that allows for tourists to view the beautiful coral reef located in this region.

      2. Amusement Park:

An amusement park constructed especially for children is located in this region. This park comprises of a fountain, manmade coral reefs, games, hillocks etc that makes it extremely appealing for children.

     3. Recreational activities:

The tranquility that surrounds this beach makes it an ideal spot for recreational activities such as walking, jogging etc.
