St. Mary’s Island Beach – Karnataka

Located at a distance of 6 km from Udupi, and 65 km from Mangalore on an island is the picturesque St Mary’s Island Beach. According to history in the year 1498, Vasco Da Gama is supposed to have arrived from Portugal on the island. This beach is renowned for possessing basalt rocks that have over the years crystallized to form whole columns which eventually split into vertical hexagonal blocks. Additionally, this beach is located in an extremely desolate spot.

  1. By train:

The closest major railway station to this beach is located in Mangalore. The Mangalore Railway Station is well connected to major cities in the country such as Chennai, Mumbai etc. Alternatively, the Udupi Railway Station can also be used.

  1. By road:

If you intend to drive to this beach the ideal starting points would be Udupi and Mangalore.

  1. Via Mangalore:

There are two routes available from Mangalore, they are via NH-66 and via SH-67 and NH-66.

      2. Via Udupi:

There are two routes available from Udupi, they are via Udupi-Malpe Road and St Mary’s Line and via St Mary’s Line.

  1. By air:

The nearest airport to this beach is located in Mangalore. The Mangalore International Airport is well connected to major cities in the country as well some major destination in the Middle East.

Climate and the best time to visit St Mary’s Island Beach

The climate at this beach during summer season which begins in March and ends in May is extremely hot and humid with the mercury rising to a maximum temperature of 39 degree Celsius. The rainfall received during the monsoons which begins in June and ends in September is “heavy”. The winter season which begins in December and ends in February is pleasant with the temperature ranging from a maximum of 34 degree Celsius to a minimum of 20 degree Celsius. So the ideal time to visit this beach is from December to February.

Things/activities to do

Since this beach is located in a secluded spot there are not many things/activities to do found on this beach Although, the picturesque beauty of this beach as well the basaltic rock formation found at this beach are truly worth admiring. In addition, this beach can serve as an ideal hotspot for passionate “Geologists”.
