Yanam Beach – Pudducherry
Located in close proximity to the River Godavari is a picturesque and pristine beach known as Yanam Beach. This beautiful beach is situated in a small town called Yanamin Puducherry. Apparently, this beach was a French colony during the British Raj and was only returned back to India in 1954. As a result of the strong French influence, many relics belonging to the French culture can still be observed around this beach. In addition, several parts of this beach are under the state of Andhra Pradesh.
How to reach the Yanam Beach
- By train:
The nearest railway station to this beach is located in Kakinada at a distance of 26 km. The Kakinada Railway Station is well connected to major cities such as Chennai.
- By road:
If you intend to drive to this beach then the ideal starting points would be Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ernakulum, and Coimbatore.
- Via Chennai:
There is one route from Chennai to this beach, and it is via Chennai-Srikakulam Highway.

There are two routes from Bangalore to this beach, and they are via Chennai-Srikakulam Highway and via NH-16.
3. Via Hyderabad:
There are two routes from Hyderabad to this beach, and they are via NH-65 and NH-16 and via NH-16.

The closest airport to this beach is located in Visakhapatnam. The Visakhapatnam or Vizag Airport is well connected to major cities in the country such as Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi etc.
Climate and the best time to visit the Yanam Beach
The summer months which begins in March and ends in May comprises of a temperature ranging from a maximum of 42 degree Celsius to a minimum of 32 degree Celsius. The rainfall received during the monsoon which begins in June and ends in September is “moderate”. On the other hand, the winter season which begins October and ends in February is extremely “pleasant” with the temperature ranging from maximum of 27 degree Celsius to a minimum of 15 degree Celsius. So the best time to visit this beach is during the winter season from October to February.
Things/activities to do
Located the close proximity to this beach is a local church built way back in 1769 which is worth visiting due to the presence of French styled stained glass work. In addition, this church consists of a plaque that pays rich tribute to a young French soldier who died at a tender age of 22. Furthermore, a large number of ardent devotees visit this church. This church also consists of a cemetery. Overall, though there are not many thing/activities to do found at this beach since it is located in seclusion and as a result of which is unexplored.

In addition, since it has been less explored and hence does not attract large crowds, this beach serves as a perfect holiday spot for all those who want to relax away from the “hustle and bustle” of city life in the presence of “sun and sand”. In close proximity to this beach lies, the popular ‘Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary’, renowned for being ‘home’ to about 120 bird species. It also houses endangered species such as the ‘white backed vulture’ and the ‘long billed vulture’. It is situated at a distance of just 21.2 kilometers from Yanam Beach.
