Marina Beach – Tamil Nadu

Renowned for being “India’s longest natural urban beach” is an extremely picturesque beach in Tamil Nadu known as Marina Beach. This scenic beach is located in the city of Chennai alongside the Bay of Bengal. In addition, this beach is approximately 300 meters wide and stretches to about 437 meters. Furthermore, this beach is extremely popular and attracts about 30,000 visitors a day during weekdays and 50,000 visitors a day during the weekend. It is also known to be mainly a sandy beach with no rocky formations.

 How to reach the Marina Beach

  1. By train:

The nearest railway station to this beach is located in Chennai. The Chennai Railway Station is well connected to major cities in the country such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Bangalore, Bhopal etc.

  1. By road:

If you intend to drive to this beach then the ideal starting points would be Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai.

  1. Via Bangalore:

There is one route from Bangalore to this beach, and it is via Mumbai Highway.

      2. Via Chennai:

There are two routes from Chennai to this beach, and they are via Kamarajar Promenade and via Wallajah Road and Kamarajar Promenade.

      3. Via Coimbatore:

There is one route from Coimbatore to this beach, and it is via NH-79.

      4. Via Madurai:

There are two routes from Madurai to this beach, and they are via NH-38 and via NH-38.

       3. By air:

The closest airport to this beach is located in Chennai. The Chennai international airport is well connected to major cities in the country as well as to international destinations.

Climate and the best time to visit the Marina Beach

The climate at this beach during the summer months which begins in March and ends in June is extremely “hot” with the mercury rising to a maximum of about 45 degree Celsius dropping to a minimum of 30 degree Celsius. The rainfall received during the monsoon season which begins in July and ends in September is “heavy”. While the winter season on the other hand which begins in November and ends in February is extremely “pleasant” with mercury dropping to a minimum of about 17 degree Celsius. So the ideal time to visit this place is during the winter season from November to February.

Things/activities to do

There are a number of things/activities to do found around this beach. They are as follows

  1. Sunset views:

This beach provides for a magnificent view of the rising and setting sun thereby making it an ideal spot for passionate photographers.

      2. Aquarium:

An aquarium is located in close proximity to this beach. This aquarium consists of wide range of exotic tropical sea and fresh water fish species.

      3. Food stalls:

A number of food stalls are available at this beach that provides for some delicious South Indian food items such as murukku, sundal etc.

      4. Historical Memorials and monuments:

Memorials as a tribute to great Dravidian leaders such as Annadurai and MG Ramachandran have been built at this beach. In addition, monuments in memory of famous personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose located at this beach are worth visiting.

Word of Caution:

Since the waves at this beach are unpredictable activities such as swimming and sunbathing are not recommended.
