Kovalam Beach – Tamil Nadu

Kovalam Beach also was known as Covelong is an extremely beautiful beach located in the state of Tamil Nadu. This scenic beach is situated in a small fishing village called Covelong in the Kanchipuram district about 40 kilometres away from Chennai. In addition, this beach is known to provide the perfect ambience for “surfing”, and is known to be one of the few spots in the eastern coast where “wind surfing” is frequently undertaken.

  1. By train:

The nearest railway station to this beach is located in Chennai at a distance of 40 km. The Chennai Railway Station is well connected to major cities in the country such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Bangalore, Bhopal etc.

  1. By road:

If you intend to drive to this beach then the ideal starting points would be Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai.

  1. Via Bangalore:

There are two routes from Bangalore to this beach, and they are via NH-48 and via NH-75.

      2. Via Chennai:

There are two routes from Chennai to this beach, and they via E Coast Road and via Anna Salai/Mount Road/Trichy Chennai Highway and E Coast Road.

      3. Via Coimbatore:

There is one route from Coimbatore to this beach, and it is via NH-79.

    4. Via Madurai:

There is one route from Madurai to this beach, and it is via NH-38.

  1. By air:

The closest airport to this beach is located in Chennai. The Chennai international airport is well connected to major cities in the country as well as to international destinations.

Climate and the best time to visit the Kovalam Beach

The climate at this beach during the summer months which begins in March and ends in June is extremely “hot” with the mercury rising to a maximum of about 45 degree Celsius dropping to a minimum of 30 degree Celsius. The rainfall received during the monsoon season which begins in July and ends in September is “heavy”. While the winter season on the other hand which begins in November and ends in February is extremely “pleasant” with mercury dropping to a minimum of about 17 degree Celsius. So the ideal time to visit this place is during the winter season from November to February.

Things/activities to do

There are a couple of things/activities to do found around this beach. They are as follows

  1. Water sports:

A number of water sports related activities such as windsurfing, swimming etc are available at this beach.

      2. Fort and Church:

An ancient Dutch Fort is situated at this beach. Apparently a few walls of this fort exist in the form of ruins as of today. Additionally, in close proximity to this beach lies an ancient Catholic Church which is a worth visit.

     3. Recreational Activities:

This beach is also ideal for recreational activities such as sunbathing.
