An extremely “pristine and picturesque” beach known as Cherai Beach (commonly referred to as Princess of the Arabian Sea) is located in the city of Ernakulum in Kerala. This scenic beach is situated in the Ernakulum district and at a distance of 25 km from Kochi. Furthermore, this beautiful beach comprises of seashells consisting of varied shapes and hues. In addition, the presence of coconut trees and Chinese fishing nets on this beach helps add more charm to the beauty of this beach.

How to reach the Cherai Beach

  1. By train:

The nearest major railway station to this beach is located in Ernakulum. The Ernakulum Railway Station is well connected to major cities in the country. Alternatively, the Aluva Railway Station located at a distance of 40 km is another good option.

Stay with a local in their home

  1. By road:

If you intend to drive to this beach then the ideal starting points would be Thrissur, Ernakulum, and Kochi.

  1. Via Thrissur:

There are three routes from Thrissur to this beach, and they are via Kodungallur-Shornur Road, via NH-544 and SH-51, and via NH-544 and Kodungallur-Shornur Road.

      2. Via Ernakulum:

There are three routes from Ernakulum to this beach, and they are via NH-66, via Pallipuram Road, and via NH-544 and Aluva-Paravoor Road.

      3. Via Kochi:

There are three routes from Kochi to this beach, and they are via Pallipuram Road, via NH-66, and via NH-966A and NH-66.

  1. By air:

The closest airport to this beach is located in Kochi. The Kochi International Airport is well connected to major cities in the country as well as international destination.

Climate and the best time to visit the Cherai Beach

The climate at this beach during the summer season which begins in March and ends in June is “dry and humid” with the mercury rising to a maximum of about 37 degree Celsius. The rainfall received during the monsoon season which begins in July and ends in September is “heavy”. The winter season which begins in October and ends in February is “extremely pleasant” with the temperature ranging from a maximum of 33 degree Celsius to a minimum of 17 degree Celsius. So the ideal time to visit this beach is from October to February.

Things/activities to do

There are many things/activities to do found around this beach that are worth exploring. They are as follows

  1. Cherai Gowreeshwara Temple:

The Gowreeshwara Temple is popular Hindu shrine that is located in close proximity to this beach. It is at this shrine that one of the biggest festivals in the whole of Ernakulum district is celebrated.

      2. Pallipuram Church:

The Pallipuram Church was built by the Portuguese in the year 1507. The altar of this church consists of a wonderful image of Ave Mary. 

      3. Pallipuram Fort:

The Pallipuram Fort is a typical European style fort that is located in close proximity to this beach. In addition, this fort was renovated between the years 1596 and 1605.

      4. Water Sport activities/Dolphin viewing:

There are a number of water sports activities such as water scooter rides, speed boat rides, snorkelling, surfing etc available at this scenic beach. In addition, dolphin viewing is also available at this beach.
