In the small village called Azhikode in North Kerala lies a picturesque beach called Meenkunnu Beach which when literally translated means “hills of fish”. Surrounded by beautiful palm trees and comprising of golden sand this beach is located in the Kannur district. In addition, this beach which is apparently an extension of the Payyambalam Beach is situated in a secluded spot and is known for its tranquillity. Furthermore, this beach is surrounded by beautiful coconut trees that add more charm to its exquisite natural beauty.

  1. By train:

The nearest railway station to this beach is located in Kannur. The Kannur Railway Station is well connected to major cities in the country such as Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore, Goa, Jaipur etc.

  1. By road:

If you intend to drive to this beach the ideal starting points would be Udupi, Mangalore, Kozhikode, Coimbatore, and Bangalore.

  1. Via Udupi:

There are two routes from Udupi to this beach, and they are via NH-66, and via NH-275 and NH-66.

      2. Via Mangalore:

There is one route from Mangalore to this beach, and it is via NH-66.

      3. Via Kozhikode:

There is one route from Kozhikode to this beach, and it is via NH-66.

      4. Via Coimbatore:

There is one route from Coimbatore to this beach, and it is via Kozhikode-Malappuram-Palakkad Highway and NH-66.

  1. By air:

The closest airport to the beach is located in Calicut. The Calicut International Airport is well connected to major cities in the country as well as international destinations.

Climate and the best time to visit the Meenkunnu Beach

The climate at this beach during the summer season which begins in March and ends in May is “hot and humid” with the temperature ranging from a maximum of 38 degree Celsius to a minimum of 23 degree Celsius. The rainfall received during the monsoon season which begins in June and ends in September is “heavy”. Meanwhile the winter season which begins in December and ends in February is “pleasant” with the temperature ranging from a maximum of 29 degree Celsius to a minimum of 13 degree Celsius. So the ideal time to visit this scenic beach is from December to February.

Things/activities to do

Since this beach is located in a secluded area as a result of which has not been developed there are not many things/activities to do found at this beach. Although the Meenkunnu beach resort is a major tourist attraction located in close proximity to this beach. Furthermore, this beach resort provides for facilities in water sports such as power kiting, kite surfing, parasailing etc. Facilities related to paragliding, an aero sport are also provided at this beach resort.
