Situated at a distance of about 10 km from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala is a scenic beach called Valiathura. This picturesque and isolated beach is located in a town called “Valiathura” in the Thiruvananthapuram district. In addition, this beautiful beach lies in close proximity to the Shankhumugham Beach. Furthermore, it is also popularly referred to as “Fishermen beach” as fishing is the main commercial activity that can be witnessed at this beach.

  1. By train:

The nearest railway station is located in Thiruvananthapuram itself. The Thiruvananthapuram Railway Station is well connected to major cities in the country.

  1. By road:

If you intend to drive to this beach then the ideal starting points would be Thrissur, Alappuzha, Kollam, and Madurai.

  1. Via Thrissur:

There are two routes from Thrissur to this beach, and they are via NH-66 and via Pampady-Pandapally Road.

      2. Via Alappuzha:

There are three routes from Alappuzha to this beach, and they are via NH-66, via NH-66 and Valiathura-Mutthathara Road, and via NH-183.

      3. Via Kollam:

There are three routes from Kollam to this beach, and they are via NH-66, via Chilakkoor-Vallakkadavu Road, and via Kollam-Ayoor Road and Kazhakootam-Killmanoor Road.

      4. Via Madurai:

There are three routes from Madurai to this beach, and they are via NH-44, via NH-744, and via NH-183.

  1. By air:

The closest airport is located in Trivandrum. The Trivandrum Airport is well connected to cities in the country as well as international destinations.

Climate and the best time to visit the Valiathura Beach

The temperature at this beach during the summer season which begins in March and ends in May  ranges from a maximum of 39 degree Celsius to a minimum of 22 degree Celsius. The rainfall received during the monsoon season which begins in June and ends in September is “heavy”. The winter season which begins in October and ends in February is extremely pleasant with the mercury dropping to the 15 degree Celsius during this period. So the ideal time to visit this beach is from October to February.

Things/activities to do

There are a number of things/activities to do found in and around this beach worth exploring. They are as follows

  1. Sunset views:

This beach provides for magnificent views of the setting sun. This view can truly be enjoyed while taking a stroll on this beach.

      2. Pier:

This beach is renowned for a pier that is 703 feet tall and was built in 1960. Apparently this pier was constructed using 127 concrete piles, and is used often by fishermen in the area.

      3. Padmanabhaswamy Temple:

In close proximity to this beach lies a renowned temple devoted to Lord Vishnu known as Padmanabhaswamy.

      4. Restaurants:

There are few restaurants located in and around this beach that provide for delicious and authentic South Indian cuisine.

      5. Fishing:

Fishing is another activity that is extremely popular at this beach.

Interesting facts

It is during the monsoon season that fishermen carry their boats right to the edge of the pier that is about 703 feet long throw them in the sea and eventually swim towards it.
